— CHAPTER TWELVE —

Pete Goes Missing

Mark opened his eyes.

“Mark!” Felix repeated, his eyes wide with panic. “Wake up!” He grabbed him by the shoulder and shook him.

It took a few seconds for Mark to understand where he was. “Wha?” he grumbled.

“It’s Pete!” Felix said. “He’s missing. I can’t find him anywhere!”

Mark pushed himself up into a sitting position on the soft surface under him. He was sitting on the bed in his room. He didn’t remember crawling onto it, but he was glad he wasn’t still on the floor. It would be one less thing to explain to Felix anyway. Not that he wanted to explain anything right now. He was still extremely drunk and it took all the energy he had to look at Felix while he talked.

Felix seemed too distracted to notice this as he began to recount all the places where he searched for Pete.

“Okay,” Mark said. He had a nagging feeling that there was something else he should have said, but his brain couldn’t connect the dots.

“His boat’s still sitting out in the middle of the lake,” Felix continued. “It’s like he got out and swam away or something. But I just called the police and I’m going to do another sweep in and around the lodge until they get here. I need you to take a look around the grounds as well, and go talk to Hector... find out if he saw anything. You’ve got a quicker foot than I do, but just make sure you don’t go too far into the woods.” He shot Mark a concerned glance, thinking about the night before. And with that, he turned and hurried out of the room.

Mark was left sitting on his bed, trying to understand what happened to him before he passed out. The memories lingered on the edge of his mind, but they were shrouded by his drunkenness. They remained as fuzzy thoughts that taunted him, but after a few seconds he couldn’t even remember what he was thinking about.

He fell back onto the bed and lay there for what seemed like hours, though in his warped sense of mind it was probably only a few minutes.

A strong urge rose up from deep within him, forcing him to get up. He leaned forward on the bed and puked on the floor. He paused for a moment then puked again. After that, he suddenly felt a little better. His head had a dull ache to it, but he was still able to get up.

With shaky arms, he pushed himself onto his feet and took care not to step in his vomit as he stumbled toward the open doorway. When he got there, he put his hands on either side of the doorframe to brace himself as he looked down the hallway in both directions.

No sign of Pete there, he thought. He turned left and walked down the hallway, remarking aloud to himself that he’d never been this way before. He poked his head in each of the empty guest rooms, occasionally forgetting where he was or why he was there.
